Don't touch me!
~ Techrat's catchphrase

Techrat (who's real name goes unstated) is the engineering genius who occasionally works for Eric Raymond. He is skilled with computers, electronics, sound equipment and laser effects. He often builds devices to vex The Holograms and he hates to be touched.

He was voiced by Charlie Adler.

History[]

Techrat is an engineer and a master of electronics. He has built many gadgets throughout the series, which can even become potentially lethal. He spends his time inside of his "Rat Hole", a secluded place where he can work alone. This is where Techrat invents all the cool and freaky gadgets for Eric Raymond, The Misfits and even The Stingers, to use against Jem and The Holograms. Techrat's place is a makeshift garage workshop full of electronic components, such as monitors, cables, diodes, circuit boards, bizarre gadgets, computers, etc. The Rat Hole outside looks like an igloo made of metal.

Appearance[]

Techrat has the left side and back of his head shaved and fashions a sort of mohawk hairstyle that falls toward the right side of his head, completely covering his right eye. His original outfit consists of a red trench coat with a yellow button up, with a light blue vest over it, and charcoal colored pants. On later appearances, he wears a gray suit with a tucked-in, purple shirt and gray dress pants.

Personality[]

Techrat is a reclusive, brilliant inventor and electronics genius who works primarily with The Misfits and their manager, Eric Raymond. He exhibits anthropophobia (fear of social interaction) and haphephobia (fear of being touched), often reacting with irritation or discomfort when others, such as Pizzazz, Roxy, Stormer, Jetta, or Eric, invade his personal space or handle his gadgets. The only exception is Minx of The Stingers, whom he tolerates, even enjoys, physical contact from, as seen in moments like “That Old Houdini Magic,” where she leans on his shoulder or holds his hand. This unusual tolerance may be due to their shared passion for electronics, though his skills far surpass hers. Some fans interpret this as professional respect, with speculation about a potential romantic connection had the series continued.

Techrat's intelligence and inventive prowess are central to his role, as he designs and develops electronic devices used by The Misfits to sabotage their rivals, The Holograms. In The Music Awards (Part 1), Eric hires Techrat to create a device that disrupts the electrical systems at Starlight Mansion, targeting Synergy's mainframe. Techrat seems suspicious that The Holograms rely on advanced technology for their performances, though he has never encountered Synergy directly (or is even aware of its existence). His prickly demeanor and protectiveness over his inventions make him a unique, antisocial figure in the series, often annoyed by others' interference with his work or personal boundaries. Despite his uptight demeanor and rife insecurities, Techrat occasionally reveals a subtle sense of humor, such as when he smirks while drawing a mustache on Pizzazz's image on a computer screen in The Jem Jam (Part 2). This rare glimpse of playfulness contrasts with his typically antisocial and protective nature.

Trivia[]

  • When Zipper was written out of the show, Techrat began appearing more often, likely in part to replace him.
  • As a tech expert, Techrat essentially fills in as The Misfits' counterpart to Synergy.
  • His Rat Hole resembles a metallic igloo.
  • Techrat, Eric Raymond and Zipper all share the same voice actor, Charlie Adler.
  • Christy Marx was inspired by English singer and artist, Boy George, when designing Techrat, and intended him to be an androgynous character, but Hasbro opposed to this idea, so she had to establish him as a male character instead.[1]
  • Trick or Techrat was the only episode where Techrat met Jem and The Holograms face to face, even though he was wearing a disguise.
  • The only person Techrat doesn't mind being touched by is Minx.
    • Christy Marx mentioned in an interview that if the series had continued, Techrat and Minx would have been in a relationship.
  • His last appearance was in the episode That Old Houdini Magic.
