~ Stormer to Kimber in The Bands Break Up |
Mary Phillips, better known by her stage name, Stormer, is the youngest member of The Misfits. She plays the keytar and writes most of their music.
She was voiced by Susan Blu.
History
While most of Stormer's personal history remains unknown, she and her brother Craig grew up in a very loving household. Before she joined The Misfits, she was struggling to make it as a musician. Pizzazz found her and she joined The Misfits. Pizzazz gave her the stage name "Stormer".
Appearance
Stormer has long, curly, cobalt blue hair that she adorns with an orange flower. Her makeup consists of three orange streaks on her left cheek, a small lightning bolt on her right, and wears red lipstick and green eyeshadow. She is usually seen wearing an asymmetrical pink shirt with a strip of zebra print fabric along the top, along with a black pencil skirt. She wears a black studded armband on her right arm, wears fishnets and black stilettos. Her appearance in the animated series is virtually the same, with the exception of her hair being longer and less curly.
Personality
Stormer, like all members of The Misfits, delights in causing trouble, particularly for The Misfits' rivals, Jem and The Holograms. While Stormer willingly goes along with most of the plots to upstage and sabotage them, she appears to have a greater sense of moral responsibility and empathy than her bandmates. While Stormer is not above acts of vandalism, theft, even destruction of high value personal property (as when she and Roxy destroyed Jem and the Holograms' instruments in The Beginning), she will have reservations about risks to someone's life or safety.
Unfortunately, despite her greater empathy, Stormer is unwilling to risk her place among The Misfits and will often go along with their schemes despite her moral reservations. Consequently, she will typically act in ways to prevent harm coming to others only if she can do so surreptitiously. In the episode Frame Up, for example, Eric Raymond and The Misfits have their goons steal the concert's ticket money and frame Jem for the theft. Right as Jem is about to be taken away by the police, a mysterious, cloaked woman appears and says that she can prove that Jem is innocent. This woman turns out to be Stormer in disguise, who did not want Jem to go to jail for a crime she didn't commit.
Another instance of Stormer providing clandestine aid to her rivals occurs in the episode The Jazz Player. On this occasion, Stormer was acting independently, without any of her bandmates in the vicinity. While dutifully doing her part to prevent the reunification of the Taps Tucker Band, she observed Aja and Joey London being pursued by loan sharks. Realizing that Aja and London would likely be hurt (or worse), Stormer was able to misdirect the loan sharks long enough for Aja and London to escape, with Aja and London unaware of Stormer's intervention, or even her presence. Stormer realized that Pizzazz would not be pleased that Aja and London escaped, but then admitted she didn't care how Pizzazz felt about it.
She will often say something sweet and kind, and the other Misfits will glare at her until she corrects herself.
Stormer also has a particular solicitude for children. When Pizzazz and Roxy scoffed at the plight of the Starlight Girls when their home burned down, she was visibly upset by their situation.[3] She was also obviously distressed and did not participate when Pizzazz and Roxy seized 13-year-old Ashley and locked her in a trunk. But as usual, Stormer was unwilling to force a confrontation with her bandmates, risking her place among The Misfits to stand up to them. When Pizzazz and Roxy demanded Stormer choose between staying with Ashley or performing with them, Stormer ultimately abandoned Ashley, still locked in the trunk, to perform with her bandmates.
Despite being frequently bullied and intimidated into compliance with her fellow Misfits, Stormer's tractability has its limits. In the episode The Bands Break Up, she became exasperated and furious with the other Misfits and quit the band after they ruthlessly mocked her for wanting them to be more serious about her newest song. After leaving The Misfits, she had a chance encounter with Kimber, who was also feeling distanced from her bandmates. Although there was some initial friction between the two, they eventually formed a duo, independent of their respective bands. Kimber even offered her half of Starlight Music as collateral to produce their joint album. But before Stormer could record her remaining vocal tracks to complete the album, Stormer abandoned Kimber and was enticed back to The Misfits when they gifted a new car and some credit cards, once again demonstrating that she values her place among The Misfits over any personal, legal or moral obligations, despite the fact that Kimber stood to lose her half of Starlight Music to Eric Raymond if Stormer failed to complete her part of the album.
However, Stormer ultimately decided to complete the album, which Jerrica produced and marketed for them. Their album went double platinum, which fulfilled the terms of their contract, allowing Kimber to retain her half of Starlight Music. So, for once, Stormer openly defied expectations placed on her by her bandmates and Eric Raymond to act on her conscience.
Stormer also possesses an acerbic wit, which she often uses to impressive effect when taunting Jem and the Holograms.
Relationships
Craig
Stormer and Craig have a very good brother-and-sister relationship. He is very protective of her, as shown in The Talent Search (Part 2). When Stormer asks Craig to find out Jem's real identity through Aja because The Misfits have threatened to kick her out, he threatened Eric Raymond and the other Misfits, and tells them that if they don't start treating his sister better, they'll have to deal with him. In the episode Britrock, at the airport, Stormer catches a taxi to see Craig, despite the other Misfits insisting that she comes with them.
Pizzazz
Stormer has openly admitted that she fears Pizzazz (and Roxy) as she recognizes the cruelty they are capable of. Stormer rarely opposes Pizzazz openly, but occasionally thwarts Pizzazz's (or Eric's) machinations surreptitiously, if she fears someone will come to harm. When she assisted Aja and Joey London in escaping from a pair of loan sharks, she remarked that Pizzazz isn't going to like the fact that Aja and London escaped. Then admitted that she didn't care how Pizzazz felt about it.
Among the rare moments in which Stormer was willing to berate Pizzazz openly (along with Roxy and Jetta) was during the episode The Bands Break Up, when their relentless taunting and mockery prompted Stormer to quit the group. Another such occasion was during the episode The Stingers Hit Town (Part 2), when Stormer joined Roxy and Jetta in walking out on Pizzazz. Stormer told Pizzazz that she needed to "stop all this nonsense [referring to Pizzazz's obsessive infatuation with Riot] and start acting like a Misfit again."
Roxy
As with Pizzazz, Stormer is intimidated by Roxy. While Stormer happily goes along with most of their schemes, she is apparently unwilling to see anyone come to harm (not even Jem and the Holograms), and recognizes that Pizzazz, Roxy and Jetta have no such compunctions.
Despite this, and their incompatible personalities, there is at least an element of trust between Stormer and Roxy. Stormer is the only Misfit who is aware that Roxy is only marginally literate, and is willing to keep Roxy's secret, even from Pizzazz and Jetta. Roxy seems unbothered by the fact that Stormer is aware of her illiteracy and has never expressed any fear that Stormer will divulge her secret.
Kimber
In the episode The Bands Break Up, after Stormer leaves The Misfits, she meets Kimber at a club called The Scene and they perform the song "I'm Okay" using Stormer's music and Kimber's lyrics. After witnessing their unexpected success, they decide to team up and release their own music. Jerrica and Pizzazz think that Stormer and Kimber are bad influences on each other, but Kimber and Stormer prove to be loyal friends and a good team. They weren't able to finish the album by themselves, though, so Jerrica helped them release their album under the Starlight Music label, which proves to be a huge success, and by the end she extends an offer to Stormer to join The Holograms, although Stormer, while grateful, respectfully declines seeing how The Misfits need her more. After Stormer returns to The Misfits, she and Kimber maintain their friendship throughout the rest of the series.
Ashley
Stormer was friends with Ashley very early in the series. They first met when Ashley joined The Misfits entourage in Kimber's Rebellion, and bonded over their mutual fear of Pizzazz and Roxy. When Eric and The Misfits kidnapped Ashley and put her in a trunk, Stormer tried to save her, only to be caught by the other Misfits. Together, she and Ashley teamed up to prove Jem's innocence when she was framed for stealing ticket money from a show in Las Vegas. When The Misfits found out that The Holograms were using the money from the Starbright movie to pay for a Starlight Girl's eye operation (Ba Nee), Stormer's first response was "Which little girl?", worrying that the girl getting the operation was Ashley.

Trivia
- Stormer is the Misfit that has more of a moral conscience than the other members. While she is a gleeful participant when The Misfits engage in acts of vandalism, theft (even grand larceny) and destruction of property, she appears to be unwilling to risk anyone coming to physical harm. Her bandmates do not have these qualms.
- In the cartoon series, Stormer played the keytar, in contrast of her doll counterpart which portrayed her playing the guitar (based on the Roland G-707).
- Stormer is the youngest of The Misfits.
- Stormer's stage name was chosen by Pizzazz.
- This was likely due to the related meaning of the name with her personality, "something particularly impressive or good of its kind".
- Stormer is capable of making an almost perfect voice impersonation of Kimber.[4]
- She is mainly seen playing her yellow keytar, but in the episode The Stingers Hit Town (Part 2), she is seen playing an acoustic guitar.
- Stormer was the first Misfit to become friends with one of The Holograms and one of the Starlight Girls.
- As revealed in Starbright (Part 3): Rising Star, she can also play the atabaque.
- She is five years younger than her brother Craig.
- Stormer's blue hair appears to be her natural color. This theory is reinforced by the appearance of her brother, whose hair is also blue.
- Stormer and Lindsey Pierce share the same voice actress, Susan Blu.
- She was played by Canadian actress Katie Findlay in a mid-credits scene in the live-action film.
