Richard Carling is a minor character in the Jem animated series. He appears only in The Rock Fashion Book and is a professional photographer.
He was voiced by Gregg Berger.
History[]
Richard is hired by Arlington House Publishing in New York to do the photography for Jem and the Holograms' rock fashion book. The first location is Marine Park, where, with the help of animal trainer Robin, he photographs the girl group with both dolphins and orca whales. However, the photo shoot goes awry when Kimber slips off the platform above the killer whales and drags the rest of her bandmates down with her. He jumps into the pool along with Rio and saves Shana. After the girls are safe, the next location is Washington, D.C. at the Washington Monument, where Clash sabotages the entire production by causing a police officer to crash his cart into the scaffolding. Once Richard and the group are safe, they go to the Grand Canyon, for which Richard has high expectations as nothing like this has been done so far. However, The Misfits arrive on location and aggravate a bat colony which completely ruins the photo shoot. Luckily, a helicopter is on site and Richard works with the rest of the crew to help Jem and The Holograms up off the cliff. After the rescue is featured in the news, Pizzazz loses her temper and convinces her father to buy the rights to the fashion book. The Misfits travel to Nassau, where they tell Richard that they have taken over. He attempts to refuse to continue working after he sees their distasteful shots - but realizes that he cannot back out because of the contract.
At a meeting the next day, Richard cheerfully shows the band their proof sheets, which contain evidence of The Misfits' sabotage. He sends them to Pizzazz, who snatches them without even checking and takes them to her furious father. He then sells the book back at a lower price than originally purchased. The book is then published successfully.
