Midsummer Night's Madness is the sixth episode of the third season, and the 59th episode overall, of the Jem animated series.

Synopsis[]

Jem and The Holograms, along with The Stingers, travel to Greece for a concert, but when Jerrica and Jem get caught in a love triangle, the trip becomes too much to handle.

Plot[]

Jem and The Holograms and The Stingers have traveled to Greece for a midnight summer concert, and are preparing to set up the stage. Already, The Stingers are creating problems, so much so that the roadies are tired of hearing demands from Riot and pretend to not understand English to annoy them. The Holograms on the other hand, are delighted to be in Greece and are excited by the romance and party stigma that surrounds the country. This is juxtaposed immediately as Jerrica is arguing with Rio about how much he compares her own actions to Jem's, constantly feeling like she is second best. The argument ends with Rio telling Jerrica their relationship is over, which gives Riot the idea that Rio will now go after Jem.

The Holograms try their best to cheer Jerrica up by asking her to forget about Rio and have fun at the festival, but she politely declines and separates from the group in search of some alone time; only to run into Riot. Riot describes Rio as insensitive and that he doesn't care about her feelings, using his charm to seem concerned about the breakup, only for it to be a ploy to ask about Jem's interests. This instance makes Jerrica even angrier and she storms off. Synergy appears in her holographic form and attempts to provide her with words of wisdom, but Jerrica is so overwhelmed that she refuses it. She transforms into Jem and performs "Can't Get My Love Together" out of frustration.

Jerrica later meets the Phaedra Oracle, who seemingly knows everything about her - even that she is really Jem. She tells her why Rio is so attracted to Jem, and that she needs to learn from her other identity and have more fun. So, as Jem, she finds Rio at a bistro and they begin to have a conversation. He tells her that he cares about Jerrica but that there is also someone else who is just as important to him. Before Rio can tell Jem who, she is pulled away by Riot who offers to take her on a tour of Athens. She is about to turn him down, but stops short when she sees Minx all over Rio and assumes that she is the other woman who he cares greatly about. Jem rushes off with both Riot and Rio following her, and Rapture remarks to herself that coming to Greece was supposed to be fun. Phaedra appears again and disagrees with Jem that Rio doesn't care about either of her identities. Phaedra suggests her to create a new one, which she seems to think is a good idea. Jem asks Synergy to change her into something completely different, and she turns into a dark haired Greek girl named Jaeme. She bumps into Rio, who was in the middle of searching for Jem, and they hit it off immediately and strike up flirty conversation. Rio says that despite the fact they just met, he feels like he has known her all his life.

Meanwhile, Rapture is pretending to be the Oracle of Athens in the town square in order to scam money off the citizens. She takes money off an elderly woman and creates a fake prediction for her future. Minx and Riot don't seem to care about her scheme and are too focused on their own destinies of getting Rio and Jem (which is depicted in the song "Destiny"). Soon after the public demand to know their futures, The Holograms approach the "oracle" and Rapture uses this as a chance to help Riot get Jem, and also insult The Holograms by telling them they will never be as big as The Stingers. Aja knows that the oracle is a fake and uncovers her to the now angry public as Rapture. In the meantime, Rio is showing Jaeme around the neighborhood. The Holograms are angry with Rio for forgetting about Jerrica and traversing around with a new flame, not knowing that the stranger is actually Jerrica. Jaeme leaves Rio to chase after her group and changes back into her real identity. She explains them her reasoning for the new identity with the help of an "oracle", but they don't seem to believe her, in fact thinking she is out of her mind and that she is actually talking about Rapture. Jerrica runs off again.

Riot steals Jerrica away on a horse-drawn carriage, announcing he no longer has interest in Jem and instead loves Jerrica now. They pass Rio, who is overcome with jealousy as Riot taunts him. Riot uses his charm to try and sweet-talk Jerrica, who is too busy ranting about Rio to notice, even though he is using all of his skills and talk of romance. Jerrica swiftly runs away, changes back into her Jaeme personality and crashes into Rio again, but he brushes her off to continue running after Jerrica. At this time, Minx is running further ahead to try to escape the mob of angry people who want their money back, and Jerrica misinterprets Rio to be chasing after her. Jerrica is driven crazy by all the madness and proclaims she should give Riot a second chance, and kisses him. With this, Rio arrives and starts another argument with Jerrica, and both of them have the same belief - that the other is too busy to care, due to liking someone else (Rio and Minx, Jerrica and Riot).

Jerrica meets up with the rest of The Holograms, and Phaedra suddenly appears. Jerrica tells her how awful her ideas were and that Rio appears to fall in love with any beautiful girl he meets, which is clearly the wrong perception of this outcome. Phaedra corrects her and and reveals that Rio is attracted to each of Jerrica's disguises due to her inner-self beauty shining through her outward appearance. Phaedra then reveals herself to actually be Synergy, who had taken her own new identity as initially Jerrica wouldn't take her advice.

Back in Athens, Riot gives up his ruse and tells Rio that he never cared about Jerrica and to take her back so that he can have Jem. Rio admits that Jem is a lot of fun, but Jerrica is the better woman. Hearing this, Jerrica creates a hologram of Jem for Riot to chase after so she is able to make up with Rio. Riot has to stop chasing the fake Jem after he discovers Minx and Rapture are still being chased by the mob. To put an end to it, he fills a jar with money and throws it at the feet of the crowd in order for them to get their money back themselves. Both bands recognize they need to perform their concert, and Jem and The Holograms open with "Midsummer Night's Madness", which is a rundown of that evening's events using ancient Greek mythology imagery.

Trivia[]

  • This episode marks Synergy's last major appearance in the series.
  • This is the second time Synergy acts on her own and the first time when she assumes another form; in this case, the Phaedra Oracle.
  • We learn that Riot thinks Rio is insensitive and takes both Jem and Jerrica for granted - and Rio thinks Riot is a clown and a creep.
  • This is one of the very few episodes that the stress of Jerrica's life reflects onto her Jem persona until the lines between both become almost indistinguishable.
