Mardi Gras is the nineteenth episode of the second season, and the 45th episode overall, of the Jem animated series.

Synopsis[]

Jem and The Holograms are performing at the Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans, where they will wear jewelries that haven't been seen for centuries. Shana finds out they were chosen because she resembles the legendary singer, Lily LaRose.

Plot[]

Jem and The Holograms are invited to the 11 days long Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans, Louisiana, which they describe as the biggest party in the world. They initially have no idea why their presence was requested, as they were invited by an anonymous contact. However, it is soon announced on the steamer they are traveling on, the Dixie Lady, that they get to wear the pirate Jean Lafitte's jewels, which haven't been on public display since 1814. Detective Pierre L'Arquette introduces himself to The Holograms as their liaison with the crew. Shana is told by Mama Lou to "beware of zombies on Fat Tuesday", and calls her 'Lily'. Pierre informs her she looks like Lily LaRose, a singer who had an affair with Lafitte.

The Misfits hear that The Holograms are on their way to the Mardi Gras and befriend a band by the name of The Zomboys to help with their plans of sabotage. Mama Lou also approaches them and warns them about the ghost of Lafitte. Ready for the parade, Jem accidentally swings through a secret passage disguised as a bookcase, and overhears Pierre and Maurice plotting to steal the jewelry. The rest of The Holograms try to escape from The Zomboys which have taken them hostage. While they are distracted, The Misfits crash the party and inform Mademoiselle Yvette, the hostess, that they will be wearing the jewels instead.

Luckily, the passageway Jem discovered leads her straight to the rest of The Holograms and she helps them escape from The Zomboys using Synergy to create a hologram of a zombified Jean Lafitte. During the photoshoot with the jewels, the power goes out and the items are ripped from The Misfits in a matter of seconds. Jem declares Pierre and Maurice to be the thieves; however, Yvette admits that she hired them both as undercover detectives to investigate the recent disappearances. The thief is then revealed as a little monkey named Francois, who is the last surviving ancestor of Jean Lafitte's original monkey.

Trivia[]

  • In this episode, "Surprise! Surprise!" is shortened, and was first performed in the episode Culture Clash.
  • The song "Everybody Wears A Mask" can be linked to Jerrica/Jem's own secret identity.
  • When meeting Pierre L'Arquette, Jem says the line "Why all the mystery? I mean, isn't Mardi Gras just a big party-" and the line seems to get cut off halfway through, as though they removed some of her dialogue.
  • This is the very last episode in the Jem series that was written by Mary Skrenes.
