Island of Deception is the twentieth episode of the first season, and the 20th episode overall, of the Jem animated series.

Synopsis[]

Jem and The Holograms are invited to perform at a concert in St. Thomas and travel aboard a luxury ocean liner to get there. Eric Raymond and The Misfits, who are convinced there's a publicity stunt going on, tag along to cash in on it. After The Holograms are tricked by The Misfits, both bands end up stranded on a tropical island. The girls, despite their rivalry, must try to survive and get help from a from a hermit living on the island.

Plot[]

Jem and The Holograms board the luxury cruise ship, Bahama Queen, after being invited to attend a concert in St. Thomas. They travel with Rio, but have to leave the Starlight Girls behind, who wave them goodbye. Ashley is jealous that she isn't able to attend the concert, but Krissie reminds her how far away it is. The Misfits decide to tag along knowing that there must be some kind of publicity, forcing Eric Raymond on the journey, who spends his time complaining about traveling over the sea.

Jem decides to change into Jerrica for the majority of the day to spend time with Rio, by sharing a walk on the deck and a few private kisses in the sunset on the stern. She tells Rio that she'll skip dinner for a nap, changing back into Jem, and heads down to the banquet hall to sit at the Captain's table. She meets Captain Warren, who is apparently has a daughter who is a huge fan of the band. He overhears Pizzazz slandering the service, food and music aboard, so he suggests that Jem and The Holograms perform instead. They sing "Set Your Sails", serenading the crowd with themes of love and paradise, which are often associated with the sea.

After the performance, the girls are approached by a shady looking crew member called Krebbs, who asks if they would like to participate in surprising the Captain for his supposed birthday. He ushers them into a lifeboat, instructing them to hide inside and jump out to surprise him. However, it turns out he has been paid by The Misfits to pull a practical joke on The Holograms, and Pizzazz pushes a few buttons which send the boat toward the ocean. However, the boat topples over and Pizzazz is pulled along with it. The pressure of the boat forces both bands to topple into the water, leaving them stranded as the Bahama Queen sails away. Jem notices that Stormer is unable to swim and dives down to save her, with the water cutting off Synergy's transmission, so she is temporarily reverted back to Jerrica until she reaches the surface.

After washing up on an unknown island, Jem convinces Stormer that Jerrica must have gone to find ways to signal a rescue ship, and they come up with a plan to ensure their survival. Shana goes fishing, Kimber checks the tide pools for something to eat, Roxy and Jem create a shelter, Aja searches for fruit in the trees, and Stormer collects firewood. Kimber spots a large fish and enlists Pizzazz's help to catch, gut and cook it for their dinner. Once the delicious meal has been consumed, the girls hear a deep groaning from within the jungle and The Misfits take the opportunity to perform "It Takes Alot To Survive". They eventually fall into a deep sleep, but The Holograms awaken to notice The Misfits have run off, taking the survival kit with them. However, The Misfits stumble upon a sounder of angry warthogs, which charge toward them at an extremely fast speed. Stormer trips and falls, and is about to be trampled by the warthogs, but Jem uses her quick-thinking to use Synergy to summon a hologram of an elephant to scare away the wildlife and save Stormer.

The girls all finally agree to stick together, helping each other get through the jungle, with Stormer swatting a spider away that lands on Kimber, and Jem saving Roxy from being attacked by a swarm of insects. They eventually reach a beautiful hidden lake and waterfall, where they can get freshened up and take a rest. Jem projects a hologram of Jerrica heading back into the jungle to encourage The Misfits to run after it - which in turn forces Jem and The Holograms right after them. After scaling the side of a mountain, they reach the top, where a seemingly-abandoned cabin sits. The girls rush in, only to discover a gramophone playing a drum record, and Pizzazz kicks it out of frustration. Then, a man jumps through the window don in tennis shoes and a Tiki warrior mask in an attempt to scare them away. Noticing he is a fake, The Misfits wrestle him down to the ground and take off his mask to reveal a handsome man beneath a shabby coat of hair who introduces himself as Angus Bean. He explains that he is a hermit since his heart was broken, but at the sight of Stormer, he says that he feels hope and love-renewed. He shows her around the island while the rest of the group try to reach a nearby ship with Angus' radio transmitter. They try for a few hours, giving up out of tiredness, when they hear the horn of the Bahama Queen approaching. Rio celebrates to have found them again, and they set off, taking Angus along with them.

Quotes[]

  • Eric: (looking through binoculars) I don't believe this. The Misfits and the Holograms together?

  • Pizzazz: (on the ledge, yelling) Jerrica, you creep. Where the heck are you?

  • Kimber: It's dangerous out here!
  • Roxy: Yeah. You think your cream puff sister is tougher than us? All alone in the jungle?

  • Pizzazz: (during dinner) So what are Jem and the Holograms going at the Captain's table while we're stuck over in the boonies?
  • Waiter: The Captain likes their music.
  • Pizzazz: The Captain's a jerk.

  • Jem: Throughout history, the seas has lured hearts to its promise of romance and adventure.

  • Pizzazz: Just what are you four plotting?
  • Kimber: We're talking about surviving.
  • Pizzazz: Hah! What do you soft little wimps know about surviving?

  • Pizzazz: Don't tell me what to do.
  • Shana: Listen up, Pizzazz. Just this once, we're all going to work together.

  • Angus: I'm Angus Bean. A hermit until I got my heart broke.

(everyone is in the boat going to the ship)

  • Kimber: Well, now that we've learned how to survive together. Maybe we can be friends.
  • Stormer: Well, I don't know. Yeah. Maybe.
  • Roxy: Hey! Don't listen to her, Stormer. She just wants to horn in on our act.
  • Pizzazz: Yeah. Remember you saved her life. She owes you.
  • Aja: Oh, yeah. Well, who rescued Stormer from those wild pigs?
  • Pizzazz: What? Now you're going to take credit for a rampaging elephant? Unbelievable!

Goofs[]

  • Notice that Jem gets in front of Shana in the lifeboat before they cover themselves, but when they jump up and say "Happy birthday!", Jem's beside Kimber and Aja is in the front.
  • The elephant projected by Jem's earrings pulls down some trees during its rampage, which would be impossible since holograms cannot interact with physical objects (the only explanation would be if those trees were also holograms themselves).

Trivia[]

  • It is suggested that Stormer has a romance with the island's hermit, Angus Bean.
  • In the scene where Kimber and Stormer agree that love isn't easy, that is the queue for the song "Love's Not Easy" to play. However, it was cut for unknown reasons, although it appears later in the series.
    • The music video for this song was actually storyboarded by Romeo Tanghal but was cut at some point. According to storyboard, the music video was mainly going to be about Stormer and the recently rescued castaway Angus Bean, along with fantasy scenes of Jem and Rio in an adventure involving pirates. This storyboard was recently released during the 2018 JemCon.
  • Lindsey Pierce introduces the videos "Set Your Sails" and "It Takes Alot" at the end of the episode.
  • This episode is one of the rare moments where Shana was outspoken enough to stand up to Pizzazz and it worked.
