Hot Time in Hawaii is the eighteenth episode of the first season, and the 18th episode overall, of the Jem animated series.
Synopsis[]
The Misfits and The Holograms are both invited to compete in the "Battle of the Music Stars", a Battle of the Network Stars-type event in Honolulu. Eric Raymond's hired thug, Zipper, supplies The Misfits with rigged sports equipment to give them the edge in the competition. Later on, Kimber is kidnapped and The Holograms have to find her in time to compete. Kimber is rescued and Zipper is arrested by the police.
Plot[]
Aja is giving an intense workout for Jerrica, Shana, Kimber and the Starlight Girls, who are out of breath when the doorbell rings. Jerrica answers and returns with a special delivery letter. When opened, they discover that they have been invited to compete in the annual "Battle of the Music Stars" in Honolulu, Hawaii. The winners will receive a trophy and the chance to perform at the Governor's mansion. Aja suggests another workout to get fit for the competition, and the girls grumble.
At a "Battle of the Music Stars" buffet, it appears that The Misfits have also been invited to compete, as Pizzazz suggests they should relish in their fortune and pile their plate high. Stormer offers the idea of exercising instead, but Pizzazz brushes off the idea and states that they can hire Zipper to train them in the art of cheating. Meanwhile, Jem and The Holograms are on their way to Hawaii via airplane, where Kimber accidentally spills her pineapple juice down a man's shirt. He introduces himself as Steve and proclaims himself as a big fan of her band's music. He offers to train the girl group for the competition and becomes their temporary coach. When the plane lands, they are greeted by some friendly Hawaiian residents and immediately get to working out. Across the beach, The Misfits are sat soaking up the sun and Stormer notices Jem working out. She gets ready to go for a run, but is stopped by Zipper, who says he has picked up some special equipment for the competition. His first piece of equipment with three switches; a red switch that is electromagnetic to pull yourself up to whoever is in front of you, a blue switch that releases a spinning wire cutter, and a green switch that releases grease out the back. Zipper had also added a spring to their pole vaults, so they can jump higher with ease. The last idea was to add springs to their sneakers, to provide them with more agility. In the afternoon, Steve is helping Kimber with her swimming, when he notices a shark fin not far behind her. He yells at her to swim in and harpoons it quickly while lifting Kimber up onto his jet ski. The shark explodes and they notice that it is nothing more than a robot - a machine brought in by Zipper.
It is the first day of the competition, hosted by Don Lo, and the first event is a bike race. Roxy and Shana are head-to-head, but Roxy uses the switches on her bike to make her competitors fail so she wins first place. During the pole vault, Pizzazz's springs ensure that she beats Jem, breaking the world record. The final event is the high jump, which Stormer also breaks the world record for. Steve and The Holograms are extremely suspicious of their success, as they are well aware that The Misfits have not been working out. At the end of the day, they finish in a tie, and attend a celebratory luau. A group of hula girls dance on the stage and a large Hawaiian buffet has laid set out. Kimber walks across the moonlit beach with Steve, informing him of how nervous she is for her big event the next day. She is about to confess her feelings, when she notices The Misfits taking over the luau. They perform "We're The Misfits In Hawaii", and once the song is over Kimber disappears to talk to Jem. Pizzazz approaches Steve, who is completely uninterested and stalks off.
After being rejected, Pizzazz asks Zipper to get rid of Kimber, so that she has a chance with the coach, but also to ensure they win the swim event tomorrow. Meanwhile, two little girls hide behind some rocks with notebooks, seeking autographs after hearing that Jem and the Holograms were at the luau. One of the girls, Gisele, catches Kimber walking along the beach just as Zipper kidnaps her. He carries Kimber toward a raging volcano, and Gisele quietly follows behind. After covering her mouth with a scarf, Zipper exits just at the volcano appears to be active. Gisele runs back to the party as the islanders watch the volcano erupt, telling Jem she knows exactly where Kimber is. They follow the little girl into the volcano and discover Kimber to have her hands tied. By the time they escape, morning has already arrived and Pizzazz has taken first place in the swimming contest. Despite missing the swimming, they manage to take part in tug-of-war, where Kimber notices Zipper and exclaims he was the one who kidnapped her. This gives The Holograms an extra push, and out of anger, they force The Misfits into the mud pool while Steve punches Zipper.
After the event, Zipper is quickly arrested and rats out The Misfits for cheating in every event. At that moment, Gisele walks in with all the tampered gear The Misfits used during the competition. Don Lo disqualifies them immediately and announces Jem and The Holograms as the new winners. Later that evening, they sing "How You Play The Game" at the Governor's mansion. Jem accepts the award, but tells the audience that really it is Gisele who is most deserving, and passes the trophy onto her. Steve talks another walk on the beach with Kimber, refusing to let her out of his sight for the rest of their stay. Rio surprises Jem on the beach and she tells him all about the competition's antics.

- Pizzazz's makeup suddenly disappears during a close-up of her in the "We're The Misfits In Hawaii" video.
- When Roxy is trying out her bike, the green switch causes grease to come out of the bike, making Zipper behind her fall, but during the race, she hits the red switch which makes the grease come out.
- When Jerrica and the others receive the letter, Aja says Kimber's line. This was probably because since both Kimber and Aja share the same voice actress, she might have read the line in the wrong voice.

- This is the final appearance of Zipper, due to Christy Marx being told he was too cruel, so she replaced him with Techrat.
- Don Lo is based off of the real Hawaiian singer, Don Ho, who was also born in Honolulu where this episode is set.
- This is the only episode to feature Zipper without Eric Raymond.
- Lindsey Pierce introduces a 42 second repeat performance of The Misfits' last concert hit, "We're The Misfits In Hawaii", and a 48 second clip of Jem and The Holograms' new outrageous hit, "How You Play The Game".
