Gordon Grody is an American vocal coach, singer, composer and voice actor known for A Walk to Remember (2002) and Strangers with Candy (2005). He was both a pop singer and backing vocalist contributing to a number short-lived disco groups of the 1970s and 1980s. He later became voice actor and vocal/songwriting/performance coach.
He provided The Stingers' vocalist and leader Riot's singing voice in the Jem animated series.
Career[]
Grody is an experienced rock and R&B vocal and performance coach and songwriter. He plays guitar and piano and offers varied services to suit his students' specific needs. He was vocally trained by Julliard's classical teacher, Beverley Johnson, and therefore has a bel canto background. He studied with her privately for 10 years (1985-1995) and used to have his lessons back to back with soprano student, Renee Fleming. Throughout his career, he has worked with many high profile artists, such as Lady Gaga, Rachel Platten and Alicia Keys.
Grody coached Alicia Keys on the the Grammy winning hit song "If I Ain't Got You". He coached and collaborated for about a year with Lady Gaga, whose singles "Just Dance", "Poker Face", "Bad Romance" and "Born This Way" were huge hits. He also co-wrote the single for Damien called "Soldier", who was a finalist and performed the song on 2014's The Voice. He coached and co-produced lead vocals, co-wrote and even sang some background voices on Kaya's first album (known for being one of the top ten in X-Factor USA).
He has frequently worked with old friend Paul Schaffer (Dave Letterman's sidekick), singing and performing background vocals during Elvis week on Letterman, singing lead and background vocals on the Strangers With Candy film soundtrack, and performing numerous times singing background vocals for Paul on Letterman with Fatboy Slim, Willie Nelson, and others.
He coached Patti Scialfa (Bruce Springsteen's wife) while she was doing TV gigs promoting her album Play it as it Lays, performing on Conan, The View, Letterman, Today, etc.
Gordon has also performed live and on records for David Bowie, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, John and Yoko, Peabo Bryson, George Benson, Sting, Debbie Harry (Blondie), Gene Simmons (Kiss), Phil Collins, Bebel Gilberto, Lea Lorien, Cyndi Lauper, LMNT, Carly Simon, Bonham, and many others.
On television, he provided the singing voice of The Stingers vocalist and leader, Riot, on the 1980s animated series, Jem. One of his vocal abilities was being able to harmonize with himself; with his vocals in different octaves being placed on top of one another.
He was the lead vocalist of the band Zinc. He also worked in an Euro band called Silence 2, where he was the lead singer for the songs "The Beast In Me" and "Moonlight Shadow". For Starcruiser, he co-wrote and was the lead singer of their song "Holding Back". For the disco band, The Rock Gazers, he was the lead singer for "I Believe In Love".
He's still a working singer in the pop music field, providing lead and backing vocals on numerous TV and radio jingles and records.
He recently moved to Brooklyn, although he continues working and teaching in Manhattan as well.
