Duncan Broadbent is a minor character in the Jem animated series. He is Lordship heir Reginald Carfax's advisor, later revealed to actually be his father. He is one of the main antagonists in the episode Renaissance Woman.
History[]
Duncan acts as Reginald Carfax's advisor, Lordship heir of Carfax County. He is generally seen at Reginald's side and is firm in removing any obstacle that could get in his way of becoming the next Lord, having played this role since Reginald was a child for up to nearly 20 years, time during which he has made sure to fill the noble family's arks with money obtained via harsh collected taxes, leaving the Carfax people in an impoverished state.
Reginald, on his part, always just blindly follows Duncan's advise, lacking the cleverness or determination to take decisions by himself; thus making Duncan the true mastermind behind everything that's been going wrong in Carfax.
A heroic outlaw called Robin Goodfellow has recently risen to fight back the current unjust regime, robbing the unfairly collected money from the royal guards and giving it back to the poor people. Duncan devises a plan to apprehend him: during the second day of the Carfax Renaissance fair, he organizes an archery tournament where Robin will surely find irresistible to participate in. Just as he planned, Robin does show up and is apprehended by the guards.
Thinking he now has the path clear to ensure Reginald is entitled Lord, Duncan wasn't counting that letting himself get arrested was all part of Robin's plan to get inside the castle to look for evidence to prove that Reginald isn't the legitimate heir to the Lordship. He also didn't count that he would get the help of The Holograms, Danse, and Robin's trusty sidekick, Jolly Jack. This group of valiant friends also infiltrate the castle on their own and rescue Robin from his cell.
While still looking for evidence against Reginald, Jem suddenly hears the sad pleas of a man coming from behind a wall. Noticing that the cement on the wall is still fresh, she pulls out the bricks and finds an old man inside wearing an iron mask. The midnight clock is already ticking and Reginald is about to be declared Lord of Carfax, when suddenly Jem appears and presents the old man to the townspeople gathered there as the real Lord Carfax, much to Duncan's horror.
Lord Carfax thanks Robin for his courage and reveals to actually be his father. Much to everybody's astonishment, Lord Carfax then proceeds to tell his story: Nearly 20 years ago, Duncan imprisoned him in his own catacombs. He then cast out Robin as an orphan and claimed his own son, Reginald, to be the Lordship heir of Carfax County. Knowing the truth, the royal guards turn against Duncan and Reginald, as the people claim them to be thrown into the dungeons. While not explicitly shown what was their fate, it can be assumed that both were indeed arrested.
